The Gateway Process: Scientific Spiritualism Refined
The “Gateway Process” is really a misnomer in a sense, since it’s a nickname for the process used in something called “Project Stargate” which was a classified program that ran from the early 1970’s onwards. It was a top secret program designed to leverage ESP and OBE’s in particular to conduct psycho-spiritual espionage upon targets far and wide, particularly the then Soviet Union or Eastern Block countries.
The name Gateway Process (GP) is then a kind of nickname given to what exactly? Well, to the methodology devised and taught by Robert Moneroe and the Monroe Institute. These methods were engineered and designed to enable those trained to not only travel outside of their bodies, but to bring back useful intelligence information. The GP is a lengthy process, with its intrinsic methods based in things similar to Yogic principles of meditation and conventional OBE methods, however it goes one – very important – step further.
Before we go into how the GP differs, it’s important to take a step back and look at exactly who innovated it and why. Not least of all because this might be the single most important spiritual researcher of the century, a figure who will probably be remembered centuries hence for his noble and selfless contributions in the face of enduring ridicule and defamatory attacks of a wide and far reaching nature. Robert Monroe.
Who Was Robert Monroe?
Robert Monroe was an American radio broadcasting executive who became a pioneer in the field of consciousness exploration. In the 1950s, Monroe began experimenting with the effects of specific sound patterns on human capabilities. His work led him to discover the phenomenon of out-of-body experiences (OBEs), which would become the cornerstone of his research.
Founding of the Monroe Institute
In 1971, Monroe published his seminal work, “Journeys Out of the Body,” which popularized the term “out-of-body experience.” Inspired by his discoveries, Monroe established The Monroe Institute in 1972. The institute served as a hub for Monroe’s research into consciousness and the effects of specific sound frequencies, later dubbed Hemi-Sync, on the human mind.
Hemispherical Synchronization
We live in a binary universe, everything has an inherent duality to it, for every peak there is a valley and for every space there is a vacuum and so goes it with the human mind. Our brains are composed of two hemispheres – left and right with each one conceptually (and practically) having dominance over one or more domains of our personage – at least physically.
During the development of The Monroe Institute (TMI) researchers (including Robert Monroe himself) discovered that the human mind resonated at 4hz when in a deep meditative state. They first attempted to replicate this by having people meditate against the backdrop of a 4hz signal pumped into their heads via headphones.
This met with mixed results. However, Tom Campbell and other notable figures joined the program and the discovery was made that in order to affect change upon the mind, it was necessary to split the signals going into each ear. In other words, instead of a single signal the signal would be sent stereoscopically with one ear receiving a differing signal than the other and a gradual synchronization of both hemispheres achieved.
This was a huge breakthrough. Suddenly the ability was obtained to take those seasoned in meditation and to effectively catapult them ahead by decades in terms of their ability to synchronize the hemispheres of their minds.
But what is the significance of this? So far we haven’t discussed that. The significance of hemispherical synchronization (HemiSync or HS as we’ll reference it here) is that it allows for a much easier OBE to occur – it allows meditation to deepen tremendously and for the meditator to go deep, see further and transcend normal consciousness.
This is a breakthrough that cannot be stressed and gave rise to (and is the basis of) what are today called Binaural beats.
But, we’re still early in the story of the Gateway Process, because the process included a lot more than just HS, and the Monroe Institute, it included one other figure, perhaps as notable as Robert Monroe himself.
Enter Joe McGoneagle
Among the many individuals intrigued by Monroe’s work was Joe McGoneagle. A decorated Army veteran, McGoneagle was involved in a classified military program known as Project Stargate. This program aimed to investigate the potential use of psychic phenomena, including remote viewing, for intelligence gathering. McGoneagle’s work in Project Stargate led him to contribute to over 450 remote viewing missions.
But this quick description of Joe’s contribution doesn’t quite do him justice. He didn’t just contribute to Project Stargate and innovations that led to the Gateway Process. He conducted some of the most powerful and accurate OBE based intelligence in history – nearly incontrovertible evidence of the phenomena that gives even the most ardent skeptics cause to pause with alarm.
Joe helped discover the Typhoon class submarine – the largest in the world at the time. He found lost children. He discovered many militar sites and he even gave the intelligence that ultimately recovered (alive) a kidnapping victim of a communist terrorist group in Italy. Joe did a lot in his time and though much older now, he’s still going strong, publishing many works and teaching.
But, let’s stay on topic, how exactly did Joe help contribute to the Gateway Processes development?
The Birth of the Gateway Process
The Gateway Process was born out of Monroe’s quest to provide a structured, systematic method for individuals to experience and explore altered states of consciousness. The process, which involves a series of specific mental exercises accompanied by Hemi-Sync audio frequencies, aims to alter brainwave output and enable the practitioner to transcend physical reality. This is important because prior to this all structured attempts were ineffectual or untethered from science whatsoever.
This is at the core of what made Gateway so special – it was a structured, scientific, testable method of inducing OBE’s in people and gathering information that could be analyzed.
Results of the Gateway Process
The results reported by those who have undergone the Gateway Process are nothing short of extraordinary. Many describe experiencing profound altered states of consciousness, including OBEs and encounters with non-physical entities. Some even claim to have accessed other dimensions and traveled through time.
Studying the Gateway Process: Books and Resources
For those interested in delving deeper into the Gateway Process, several books provide comprehensive overviews of the technique and its implications. Monroe’s own books, including “Journeys Out of the Body,” “Far Journeys,” and “Ultimate Journey,” offer firsthand accounts of his experiences and insights. Additionally, “Mind Trek” by Joe McGoneagle provides a detailed exploration of remote viewing and its connection to the Gateway Process.
These books are worthy reading because they offer insights far beyond this article. But you don’t need to spend a dime to experience the fundamentals of the Gateway Process.
A simple trip over to YouTube.com and search for ‘Hemi Sync’ will reveal hundreds – if not thousands – of Binaural beats and even work of Robert Monroe that is now given away freely. A simple pair of headphones makes accessible the fundamentals of Hemi-sync for everyone. Therefore, just about anyone who possesses headphones or earbuds of a sufficient quality to render clear audio and a relatively calm place of rest, can experiment with this technology all they want – at no cost whatsoever.
The Role of OBEs in the Gateway Process
Out-of-body experiences play a vital role in the Gateway Process. In fact, one of the primary goals of the process is to induce a controlled OBE. This allows the practitioner to explore non-physical realms and gain insights beyond the scope of ordinary consciousness. Monroe believed that the ability to consciously induce OBEs could unlock unprecedented potential for personal growth and discovery.
Though is the hard part for many – including this author. Though it isn’t very difficult to experience profound experiences by conducting Hemi-sync sessions on oneself, it’s very difficult to avoid eventually falling into a dream state – if not one which is lucid, by virtue of the process. Recollection in useful detail is difficult without the aid of another.
During the actual work done by McGoneagle and others, an entirely sound and radio-wave isolated chamber was used in conjunction with a microphone and a kind of director. This chamber was connected via two way hardwired audio to a control room where the director could help to keep the practitioner in a state of quasi-wakefulness and ask questions. This part of the process is missing when conducting this alone and though profound experiences are possible, a great many of us (including myself) experience a strong emotional recollection of events, but find it hard to integrate cogent narratives or stories about the experience. Draw from this what you may – each and every one of us has our own experience with this technology, should we try to dabble with it.
Conclusion
The Gateway Process represents a fascinating convergence of science, spirituality, and exploration of the mind’s untapped potential. While the technique continues to be the subject of debate and investigation, its promise of transcending the boundaries of ordinary reality continues to captivate those in search of deeper understanding of consciousness and the nature of existence.
Officially shut down by the 1990’s, this program proved useful for many years and produced intelligence of an incalculable value. The validity of its findings is all but incontrovertible in the face of skepticism and, as many have theorized, those who held strong opinions against it were often motivated perhaps by other interests.
The Gateway Process and what it’s spawned since have been a boon to seekers the world over and have helped to advance the cause of spiritualism in profound ways, by making accessible the ability of deep meditation to those who might otherwise never experience it.
